Protecting Your Skin from the Sun
Remember when we thought slathering on baby oil to promote tanning was doing something good for our skin?
These days, a dizzying number of sunscreens and sun blocks cram stores' shelves, promising protection from the
sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. If you don't have a PhD in chemistry, reading and understanding the ingredients lists
on those bottles is nearly impossible.
Yet shielding your body from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light is vital, in any weather or season. Both types of UV
rays—UVA and UVB—are invisible and damaging, causing sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. Cloudy days
are no protection, since UV rays penetrate clouds. And with the earth's ozone layer thinning, solar radiation is
increasing. So are all types of skin cancer, including the most serious—malignant melanoma.
Still, many of us think about using sunscreen only when we're heading out to the beach or pool. Even then, the
averageU.S.adult uses less than one bottle a year. That's a mistake. UV rays do their damage anytime. They can
pass through window glass or reflect off concrete and snow as well as sand and water. Artificial sources of UV light,
as in tanning booths, are also dangerous.
"The more sun you get, the more likely you are to get damage and potentially increase the development of melanoma
and skin cancer," says Diane S. Berson, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Cornell University Weill Medical
College in New York City. "We recommend that people wear sun protection every day."

How to Summer-Proof Your Hair

When it comes to sun protection, skin gets most of the focus, but our hair needs some consideration as well. As
anyone who's ever suffered from stringy strands or a burned scalp knows, the sun can do some major damage to your
tresses. Here are some tips to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy all summer long.
1. Avoid the Burn
Your scalp needs SPF, too. Nothing is worse than an itchy red scalp that peels after a bad burn. Powder sunscreens
and sprays make it easy to protect your scalp so don't skimp on the sunscreen.
2. Be Gentle
If you plan to be outside a lot—sweating and swimming—you'll end up washing your hair more often. Some shampoos
contain harsh chemicals that will dry out your hair with more frequent washes. Try a sulfate-free formula instead. Although
it may be difficult at first to get used to the lack of suds in these shampoos, the sulfate-free formulas will be much gentler
on your stressed-out strands. Another way to lessen your hair stress is to use no-tangle bands when you wear it up.
3. Protect All Day Long
Give your hair a boost of moisture that lasts all day with a light, nourishing leave-in conditioner. This will give you a
healthy dose of shine and help prevent static in dry conditions.
4. Repair Your Hair
If the damage is already done and your hair looks limp, frizzy or dull, do a deep conditioning and repairing hair mask to
restore shine and body. Applying a hair mask once or twice every week is a great practice for everyone during the summer
months. I love to use Argon oil and coconut oil for this, although they can be difficult to rinse out. Moroccan oil makes a
wonderful restorative hair mask, too. If you're dealing with split ends, schedule regular trims with your hair stylist over the
summer months and lay off the flat iron and hair dryer a couple days a week.

Three Things You Should Do When You Wake Up

Jack Wiener, a certified and licensed psychoanalyst, founder of the former School for Creative Movement in NYC and
author of The Way of the 4th Toe: Into the Feeling Body, believes that the most important thing you can do as soon as you
wake up is to gently bring your awareness fully into your body, so that as you move through the rest of the day, you maintain
a sense of grounding that can help you cope with the physical and mental stresses of daily life.
1. Gently flex and point your feet for 15-30 seconds. This, says Weiner, is a good way to gently begin to activate your
musculature and to bring your awareness to your feet, which is literally grounding. Then, wiggle your fingers and gently open
and close you hands into a fist shape for 15-30 seconds. "Those are small little things," says Weiner, but they can really help
you if your standard MO is to immediately activate your whole body by springing out of bed with your mind on what you have to
get done.
Next, as you get out of bed…
2. Consciously place your feet on the floor. Stand there for a moment, fully aware of the floor beneath you, and concentrate on
feeling grounded.
Finally...
3. Do a gentle hamstring stretch. "This will sustain your connection to the ground," Weiner says, and delay the pulling up into
your upper body that leads not only to a lack of feeling grounded, but to tension in your neck and shoulders. The more
grounded and "in your body" you can start your day, says Weiner, the more you will be able to carry this feeling and
awareness into the rest of your day. Good morning, indeed!

Drink More Water to Lose More Weight
How much water do you drink per day? Health experts say we should be drinking around 2 liters per day to stay healthy. Water
has zero calories so if you replace just one can of soda with water each day, you will save over 1,000 calories per week. Take it steady,
don't guzzle it all down at once but rather break it down into regular small sips. Regulate your consumption so that you drink several glasses
of water throughout the day

Keep Protected
Caring for your skin is very important throughout the summer months, especially against the sun as it not only saves it from getting dark, but
also protects against the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun that can damage your skin thoroughly. It is equally important to protect your skin through
using a good moisturizer with an SPF factor of 15 or higher. You should use it regularly as it avoids the sun spots and fine lines that occur due to
sun exposure. Even when there is a cloudy day you should not forget to put on a sunscreen. You should allow at least 10 minutes for the moisturizer
to absorb before you go out.

Use Waterproof Makeup
During the summer days, one is bound to get sweaty. Therefore, waterproof makeup is the only refuge. There is nothing worse than running
mascara to spoil your entire look. For this very reason, your mascara has to be definitely waterproof. For its removal, an oil-based eye make-up
remover is essential to take it off properly. If you want to get the perfect look, then you should get your eyelashes professionally tinted, especially if

It is important to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh, so exfoliate on a daily basis. Keep a washcloth or a buff pad handy to be used

Skin Tone Should Be Matched
When there are summer days, you want to have that glowing look on your face instead of the sweaty look. Swap the fake bake look for a
bronzing powder to give you that colour of the skin that you naturally are. This will allow you to look fresh instead of all worn down. Just make sure
you know which shade to use that matches your skin tone. Once the skin tone is set, then nothing else is to be worried about.
